Jet A1 is a kerosene grade of fuel suitable for most turbine engine aircraft. It has a flash point minimum of 38 degrees Celsius (100 F) and a freeze point maximum 0f -47 degrees Celsius. It is available worldwide and very much quality assured through the adoption of the Aviation Fuel Quality Requirements for Jointly Operated Systems (AFQRJOS), which meets the most stringent specifications of the British Ministry of Defence Standard DEF STAN 91-91 and the ASTM Standard Specification D 1655.
Jet fuels are specialised products that are manufactured according to very tight controlled specifications. Almost all jet fuels are derived from crude oil so to whichever grade (or spec) is required, they are all much produced the same way. The most fundamental refining process is distillation, this separates the raw materials into various streams defined by their boiling points.
